In 2006 at the 10th International Vegan Festival, Denmark, an Italian named Stefano decided to throw himself off the world's largest sand-dune. Several of us followed, and the first international vegan dune-tumbling championships and the Extreme Vegan Sporting Association both resulted. The latter seeks to showcase vegan fitness through increasingly novel means of risking life and limb. We're also seriously dedicated to fun.
In 2009 we climbed the highest peaks in each of Wales, England and Scotland, within the same 24 hours - see Vegan 3 Peaks Challenge (www.vegan3peaks.info) for more pics, published stories and video. Here we're climbing Scotland's Ben Nevis - the highest UK peak - shortly after dawn.
This fully roped party retreating past us festooned in ice and snow did nothing for our peace of mind. We weren't expecting or equipped for the mini-blizzards about to hit us.
Andrew Taylor on Ben Nevis. This was the only minute during the five hour ascent in which the sun cleared.
The sudden drop looming out of the murk informed us that, finally, the summit was close. We'd just stumbled onto the edge of Five Fingers Gully, into which others have fatally fallen.
In 2010 we were ready for the Vegan 15 Peaks Challenge (see www.vegan15peaks.info for more pics and stories). To be allowed by our Lupine Adventure guides to attempt all 15 Welsh 3,000 foot summits in the same 24 hour period, we first had to successfully complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge. This was the descent from Pen-y-Ghent - our final summit - after a very long day.
