The south-west is the holiday playground for the people of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. 3.5 hours south of Perth, it’s famous for its old growth forests (now saved from logging after we kicked the conservative government out!!!), wineries, caves and endless miles of ruggedly beautiful coastline. Inhabited by escaped hippies, artists, surfers and exotic Australian mammals whose names are unknown even to me, the region offers a perfect relaxed escape from the hustle of the big city. It takes a week to explore properly. We used to go there annually for holidays when I was a kid. Later, I went on many caving expeditions deep into the forest with my university outdoor club.
