Home to the headquarters of the United Nations (try to prevent wars; they also have an HQ in New York) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (deal with the casualties of war), and the Geneva conventions, this small, beautiful and intellectual city has been the world center for humanitarian efforts for about a century. Forty percent of the 400,000 residents are foreigners. I visited briefly to collect my UK working visa and felt extremely at home there. On the Red Cross tour I ran into an Australian interviewing to “be sent off to various war zones around the world” for a year or so. Totally awesome! There is only the smallest of gaps between these people and animal rights activists like me. We deal with similar holocausts of suffering and our motivations are near identical.
