English coast 2004-2005

Their beaches are made of rocks and the water's freezing. Poor sods! They're so used to it they actually surf in some places. Apparently they have sand at some beaches but I haven't seen any yet. I'll keep looking ... Meanwhile, if you want a good beach, try Spain, the Mediterranean, the tropics, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Australia, or just about anywhere else! Ye Gods. At least they have good castles!

White cliffs of Dover

These famous white cliffs are visible from Calais, France, on a clear day, from where the Dover ferries depart, and where the chunnel (channel tunnel) emerges. Above Dover port they're full of amazing tunnels at least 5 levels deep, which comprised part of the English high command during WWII, and later, a nuclear shelter for the government, which was still later abandoned when the cliffs were found to be too porous. The top two levels are open for public tours. There is even an underground hospital.
