Arguably the world's most prestigious university, Oxford consists of heaps a historic colleges dating back about 800 yrs. There is no centralized campus! Some great people like Shelley attended, who electrified his tutor's doorknob, and was finally expelled for distributing a leaflet entitled 'The necessity of atheism.' Religiosity was a prerequisite to admission back then.
The town is quite fun, with interesting streets and shops.
One of the numerous colleges.
Magdalen College is partly open to the public.
Like the Great Hall in Harry Potter...
They asked her if she was a resident student when we entered ... hee hee :)
This tree was about 200 yrs old. Jasmijn thought it deserved a good hug. Most of it didn't fit into the shot.
Love those ancient cafes ...
3 weeks ago, England beat Australia in the cricket for the 1st time in 18 yrs. The otherwise excellent bookstores are already selling the books ... to those sad English it's like finding the holy grail.
Dedicated to the memory of 3 Cambridge bishops who were burnt at the stake for their religious beliefs. That's some serious intercampus rivalry/academic/religious squabbling ...! There was also an 'incident' when an Oxford student took a dislike to the taste of his beer. 3 days after pouring it over the barmans head the riots had ended and 64 (?) students were dead. Relations between the townsfolk and academics have always been a little tense ...!
Cambridge was created by a group of scholars who split off from Oxford hundreds of years ago. It's also arguably the most prestigious university in the world ... :)
It also consists of lots of pretty colleges.
And again, a pretty little town, filled with fascinating shops, esp. bookstores. Both towns have very pretty rivers bordering them on which the posh and even not-so-posh can go 'punting.'
