This castle guarded a strategic pass between mountain ranges.
This was the site of several sieges and pitched battles.
From the train. This one is massive; unfortunately we didn't get to see it. Next time!
The ocean once lapped the shore at the base of the cliffs where a guarded dock allowed re-supply by ship.
The double walls are each massive!
Unfortunately the ocean has receded several hundred metres.
That's the Welsh national flag. Note the dragon; I'm sure they still hide out in the mountains somewhere, such as those of Snowdonia in the background, from where the Welsh rebellions used to come.
The Princes of Wales are now crowned upon this dias.
Built by a wealthy estate-owner in noveau-Norman style, this spectacularly beautiful castle could not really withstand a battle.
I was very excited to have found such a perfect example of an oubliette (dungeon with only a ceiling exit), and very disappointed to later learn it was merely an ice cellar.
The lord of the castle possessed an amazing garden. This bit was a swamp filled with gigantic plants.
