During my ‘imprisonment’ in
Philadelphia in 2002 – 2003, the closest beach was at Atlantic City on the New
Jersey shore, a two hour drive. The first time I visited I had no idea what I
was getting into. I found the second biggest gambling city in the world, after
Las Vegas. And, of course, there was The boardwalk - and I do mean ‘The.’ This
was the very same boardwalk immortalized in that song ‘under the boardwalk, down
by the seeeaee…’ It runs for about 30 miles along the coast, and in Atlantic
City is extremely colorful, lined by endless shops, casinos, oceanic piers, and
a couple of very fun amusement parks (including one with a ride that shoots you
about 150 m into the sky in about 2 seconds). Packed with people, it was a lot
of fun, especially at dusk.

The casinos would put the palaces of bygone civilizations to shame. They’re completely unbelievable.
It looks like a beach, sounds like a beach, smells like a beach … but feels like the North bloody Pole, which I believe was just off camera to the left. OK, so this wasn’t summer, but still …
For about 100 miles North and South, summer houses and retirement villages line the beach. It’s actually very nice for the ocean-born like me, although it might bore others.
