After attending the national animal rights conference in Los Angeles in 2003, I
went south to the Mexican border to check out San Diego. Strategically located
two hours south of Los Angeles, this pretty city of sun, surf and yacht harbors
seems the closest American equivalent to Perth, Western Australia - my long-lost
home. Eventually I want to settle there for nine months of the year and head to
Perth or the Australian Sunshine Coast during the northern winter :)
After San Diego, I drove all the
way up the Pacific Coast Highway to Seattle, next to the Canadian border, to
start work for the Northwest Animal Rights Network, once again, sleeping in the
car. At least I got to sleep under Californian Redwoods this time – the world’s
largest and most majestic trees.

I believe I’ve seen those bridges in various movies. After all, Hollywood is only hours away.
A very cool art gallery at Big Sur, half way up the Californian Coast.
The ‘boardwalk’ at Venice Beach, Los Angeles, is frequented by roller-bladers, joggers and walkers, and lined by craft and food stalls. It’s very cool; I’d love to run or blade along it. The lovely lady on the left was Judy, my guide.
