In 2003 I drove from Boston, in
the north-eastern corner of the US, to LA, in the south-west, to attend and
speak at the national animal rights conference there. It took five days and cost
under USD 150. I slept in the car (no air-conditioning), eating canned and
Chinese restaurant food. I did the same thing in reverse about a year previously
in temperatures up to 43 C being tortured by right wing radio stations across
the midwestern Bible Belt - it's not fun. Good thing I'm Australian and a
spiritual master of patience and pain :)
The Grand Canyon is one day out of LA, in the Arizonan desert. I camped under
desert trees and a carpet of stars in the South Rim caravan park, not far from
the edge, and was gone soon after dawn, before the ranger came for the fees
(unfortunately I was broke).

Modern architects attempted to built this gift shop and observation tower on the canyon edge in the style of the Mesa Indians and the natural surrounds.
There’s a trail out there somewhere, going down to the bottom. It takes about a day to walk and you can camp at the bottom. Unfortunately I had to be in Los Angeles the next day. Another time, perhaps …
The canyon is about a mile wide and just as deep and looks amazing from the air!
