Note the slowly-eroding larva cone - the islands are very volcanic.
What many don't realise is that the Hawaiian islands have more than magical beaches; they also have mountains in the interior so high that there are ski runs on the big island (Hawaii) in winter - those peaks are over 4,000 m I think. Ie, you can swim, surf or watch lava bubble into the sea from active volcanoes in the morning, and ski in the afternoon. What could possibly be better ...
These mysterious ranges and peaks hide all manner of exotic flora and fauna, depending on the altitude, and are unreal for trekking (after which you can go swimming again ...)
North shore, Oahu, about 2 hrs drive from Honolulu on the south shore.
The capital of Oahu, and of the state of Hawaii.
A lot of it looks like this :) A wee bit different from the grey and dreary streets of London, Brussels, Philadelphia etc etc etc!
One of the great chieftains of the Hawaiian islands in ceremonial dress.
The top part waffles on about how they refuse to stock meat on principle, because of the cruelty inherent in its production. The other bits boycott environmentally-harmful products in favour of organic. It's brilliant! And the food (you can dine in-store) is out of this world.
What a way to make a living!!!
I forgot; for those tiny few of you who may not know, Hawaii has some of the world's very best surfing, including waves the size of small mountains.
The large yellow catamarran in the background is one of several that offer daily tours of the outer reefs.
... whether or not you can avoid tripping over the girls :)
