Mt. Rainier, Washington, US, 2003.

In 2003 I was the Director of Research and Education for the Northwest Animal Rights Network, the most active grassroots AR group in the Pacific North-West and, indeed, one of the most active in the US. I got to live in Seattle, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Surrounded on nearly all sides by mountains, water and islands, Seattle is about two hours south of the Canadian border on the north-west coast. The wilderness, mountains, forest and islands all around Seattle are beautiful.

Mt. Rainier was 90 mins from my door and I visited three times. It would have been more had I not been super-busy. Ringed by the 90-mile aptly named ‘Wonderland Trail,’ and beautiful forests and campgrounds, the summit is around 4,000 m and accessible only via some serious mountaineering from high camp to higher camp. Many have died in the attempt. Unfortunately not having any gear I only made it to the base of the snow at just over 2,000 m. Perhaps another time …

Mt Rainier 1

Dead ahead, at the tip of the brown ridge just right of the middle, is the last base camp before the high snow camps. There are no marked trails; it’s true mountaineering.
