In 2001 I had one of the adventures of my life. I’d recently broken up with my
American girlfriend who’d then left Australia and gone to live in Richmond,
Virginia. However, we suffered a major communication breakdown when we broke up
and I hadn’t had the chance to say goodbye properly. So I decided to take her a
special Australian rose made of glass and gold, and to say good bye in person. I
figured it was the least I could do.
And so I took out a loan and booked the flights. Unfortunately, on the last of
the five flights to the other side of the world, the rose broke, so the first
thing I did was scour Richmond for a glassblower. The artist extraordinaire I
found was probably the only person in the state who could have fixed it, and he
excelled himself when I told him the nature of the mission. In fact his boss was
dead keen to call the TV stations but I managed to restrain him :)
Unfortunately, however, when I surprised my ex-girlfriend with the roses, I discovered she was living with a new boyfriend and was considerably less than thrilled about my presence. I left and spent the next several days waiting for her to call me so we could talk. In the meantime I explored the beautiful and historic city of Richmond, Virginia.
