Universal Studios, Los Angeles, 2002.

I was lucky enough to be taken for a tour of Universal Studios, Los Angeles, by Craig Jones, the CEO of Rescue Critters (www.RescueCritters.com). Craig used to work in the costume department, before combining his special effects artistic skills with the anatomical knowledge of veterinarians to produce his range of life-like CPR and clinical skills training animal mannequins (see ‘Activism’), which can replace some harmful animal use in veterinary education.

Universal Studios is huge! The Lower Lot is where all the studios are. They’re long rows of warehouse sheds, enclosed to the outside world while dramas are played out within. After touring the Lower Lot studios via train, we rode a 100 m multi-stage escalator to the Upper Lot, where most of the rides and shows are. As with Disneyland, the hour-plus queues are well worth the wait, and outdoor concerts and costumed actors wandering the crowds keep folks amused.
