  • We started in London with a massive hire van, allowing plenty of room to spread out and stow our gear.

  • Summit 1, Mt Snowdon, Wales: Snowdon ascent. Haunted lakes: legend has it that King Arthur was taken away by the Ladies of the Lake here upon his death, and that his knights lie sleeping in a cave hereabouts, awaiting the horn call to rouse them once more to the defence of the realm. We looked for but did not see the knights. Evidence of faery presence, however, was abundant.

  • Meanwhile, our helpers Jasmijn and Will took it easy and admired the local wildlife. They're much smarter.

  • We delayed turning on our torches as long as possible, being forced to do so 15-30 mins prior to this shot. The fog scattered our light in all directions, making it incredibly hard to find the trail, or the Scafell Pike summit cairn here, which we reached around 22:45, at 978 m.

  • Next, a fast, wild but safe drive through the wilds of Scotland brought us to Glencoe, and beyond to Ben Nevis. The cancellation of our driver 24 hrs prior to the event meant Andrew T and I had to drive as well. I got about 2 hrs of broken sleep. Thank God for coffee!

  • The snow became a minor blizzard. We could only see from one rock cairn to the next - about 30 feet (the white haze has been photoshopped away). The path consisted of footprints in snow that were rapidly being buried. This fully roped party descended past us dripping with sleet and snow. Not good...
