Overland Track, Tasmania, in December.

Just before Christmas, we loaded up our packs, feasted on a final meal, and headed off deep into the Tasmanian wilderness. The Overland Track is Tasmania's premier long-distance walking route, traversing up to 100 km (with side-trips) of pristine subalpine terrain. Don't miss the published story of this adventure!

Finally, we reached Pine Valley Hut. The mossy riverbanks nearby provide beautiful camping sites - but they flood during rain - which means, often.
In the hut we found Michael. This super-strong guy had fallen off a log yesterday onto his arm, carrying a heavy pack. He was lucky not to break it. It was badly swollen and badly bandaged when I found him. He was ignoring the pain and had just climbed the Acropolis (mountain) - the most fearsome peak on the entire track! So I had him go dunk his arm in any stream (ie, ice-water) for 10-15 mins, and re-dressed it. He then grabbed his heavy gear and marched off somewhere... I found out later that he was also an opera-singer. Just goes to show, you can never be too sure of assumptions re: people and their professions!
After lunch we headed off up the Acropolis trail, which was really beautiful.
