Just before Christmas, we loaded up our packs, feasted on a final meal, and headed off deep into the Tasmanian wilderness.     The mountains seemed to go forever, with range after range stretching away to the horizon of one of the world's most mountainous islands. The landscape was vast and ancient - it felt primeval. It was with the greatest of reluctance I started my descent, vowing to return someday, with survival gear, a better camera and tripod.
    At the hut that night, Sjoerd and Diana blew us all away by coming up with yet another fresh salad dinner, after six days in the wilderness! This explained why they were each carrying two packs!
