Australia in December 2010 - January 2011.

We commenced our great Australian adventure of 2010-2011 on Queensland's wonderful Sunshine Coast. A brief spell there was followed by one even briefer in Brisbane, followed by a single day in Launceston, Tasmania, before we spent a week hiking the world-renowned Overland Track (which may be seen in another gallery). Then we spent a day recuperating in Hobart, and three wonderful days exploring SE Tasmania. Next, we flew to the Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef. Our adventures on Hook Island and Reefworld may be seen in the relevant galleries. We completed our trip with a sea-kayaking adventure, before most reluctantly boarding our flight back to the English winter :(

Tasmanian devils are among the wildlife motorists need to take care to avoid.
Poppy fields are frequent sites, because Tasmania grows most of Australia's medicinal opium crop. These are guarded by dire warnings and electrified fences.
The majority of Australia's convicts were sent to Tasmania, or Van Diemens Land, as it was then known. Those who committed further crimes were sent to harder prisons, among which Port Arthur was most prominent. This notorious penal colony was situated at the end of the Tasman Peninsula, which was separated from mainland Tasmania by a very narrow neck of land, guarded by dogs trained to be vicious. The convicts were also told that the waters were patrolled by sharks. Nevertheless, many tried to escape, and a few succeeded.
