Australia in December 2010 - January 2011.

We commenced our great Australian adventure of 2010-2011 on Queensland's wonderful Sunshine Coast. A brief spell there was followed by one even briefer in Brisbane, followed by a single day in Launceston, Tasmania, before we spent a week hiking the world-renowned Overland Track (which may be seen in another gallery). Then we spent a day recuperating in Hobart, and three wonderful days exploring SE Tasmania. Next, we flew to the Whitsunday Islands on the Great Barrier Reef. Our adventures on Hook Island and Reefworld may be seen in the relevant galleries. We completed our trip with a sea-kayaking adventure, before most reluctantly boarding our flight back to the English winter :(

    Young boys were regularly convicted of crimes in England and sent to Australia. To separate them from the hardened adult prisoners, they were kept in a separate prison here at Pt Puer, where - as with in the main penitentiary - strenuous, often successful efforts were made to teach them useful trades.
    For the criminally insane and other extreme cases, the Separate Prison awaited. The supermax prisons of today are based on similar concepts. Prisoners are isolated in their cells for 23 hours daily, and denied contact with virtually all other humans. Cocooned in silent worlds, harsh penalties awaited those who spoke to - or even looked at - any others. A disturbing proportion of such prisoners appeared to go insane.
