Peruvian adventures in August

In August I was invited to Peru by national animal protection organisation UPA to give a series of presentations on humane education, animal experimentation and several other animal protection issues (see pics). Little did they know I had been dying to search the Andes for the little-known South-American yeti, Pie grande. I therefore quickly accepted... Don't miss the published story of this adventure!

  • I love flying. But after about 20 hours or so I was enjoying the Caribbean views here through wasted eyes and an increasingly aching body. Maybe it's just old age...?

  • On the way through in Newark airport I was truly shocked to see this restaurant proudly advertising its meat, like art specimens on display. I've never seen anything like it, in all my global travels. What on Earth is wrong with those Americans?!?

  • And a stunning view from this lookout point about 80 m above the beach, in the middle of the sweep of a vast bay. I not only had the beach, with the eternity of the ocean to gaze at, but had the serenity of being up high. There was even a hidden mall just beneath here, with lots of pretty cafes, set into the cliff unobtrusively so as not to spoil the view too much. One of them was even a starbucks with soya lattes - my lifeline in what turned out to be a nearly soya-free world. I almost felt like I could stay forever... Except for just one thing. Oddly, the sun never seems to come out in Lima. But who needs it anyway, after dark...

  • I've seen one other Fountain Park - in Barcelona. It's beautiful apparently (not working during my visit!), but has only one fountain. Lima's park has 16!!! It must surely be the biggest and best in the world.
