Peruvian adventures in August

In August I was invited to Peru by national animal protection organisation UPA to give a series of presentations on humane education, animal experimentation and several other animal protection issues (see pics). Little did they know I had been dying to search the Andes for the little-known South-American yeti, Pie grande. I therefore quickly accepted... Don't miss the published story of this adventure!

The ice-climbing in those flutings is spectacular, and horrifically dangerous (at least, that's how the famous mountaineer Joe Simpson described it). He had mountaineering accident and epic survival adventure not too far from here, which he recounts in his book and movie Touching the Void.
And what a ridge walk that would be...
On the far side of the lake the ice appeared to come down to the waterline. So I decided to trek around to it. 10 minutes before I crossed below this bit of cliff, however, I heard a noise from above. Next instant, a small avalanche of ice blocks and snow dust was tumbling down. Although I never saw it, I think the South American yeti, pea grande had probably been spying on me, and accidentally triggered this avalanche. Although the warming climate is also destroying the ice (I saw a second small avalanche elsewhere, in the 30 mins I was there). At the base of the lake were massive morraines (rock rubble walls), indicating where the glacier once used to end. The entire lake wound have been under maybe 100 m of ice in the last ice age.
